Helping Your Smile Heal
Caring for your smile is a 24/7 affair, especially if you’ve just left our office following a particular treatment! In order to ensure that your recovery is as smooth and pain-free as possible, we encourage you to follow all guidelines provided by Dr. Ropi. Additionally, we’ve put together some useful resources to help you navigate those first few hours and days following your treatment. If you ever have any questions or experience any complications, please contact our Derry office.
All-on-X Dental Implants Post-Op Instructions

You’ll want to rest at home and take it easy for the first 72 hours after your surgery. Refrain from pulling on your lips or cheeks, and don’t mess with the surgical site since this could delay healing. It’s normal to experience some swelling and discomfort, so take all prescribed medications and use cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relievers. Also, refrain from heavy lifting, exercise, and smoking.
Crowns Post-Op Instructions

Sensitivity and tenderness of the tooth and surrounding gums are common for the first day or two after a tooth has been prepared for a crown. Over-the-counter pain relievers can usually help; however, it’s also wise to avoid biting and chewing on that side of the mouth until numbness wears off. Once your final restoration has been placed, avoid chewing on it until the cement has had time to fully bond.
Dental Implant Post-Op Instructions

Some pain, bleeding, and swelling are normal following oral surgery, but it’s important that you do not poke or prod at the surgical site. You should be able to manage your discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen. Avoid brushing near the surgery site, and for 24 hours following your surgery, do not suck on a straw, brush, rinse, spit, or smoke.
Frenectomy Post-Op Instructions

The goal is for the frenum to heal and re-form as high as possible, and you’ll need to facilitate this during recovery by gently stretching the new frenum as instructed by Dr. Ropi. It’s normal for the wound to feel sore for a few days, but over-the-counter pain relievers and cold compresses can help with discomfort.
Spark Clear Aligners Post-Op Instructions

You will need to rinse your aligners before each use using room-temperature water, and it’s important that you never wear them while eating, drinking, chewing gum, or smoking. Clean your aligners after brushing your teeth by gently brushing your aligners using a toothbrush and mild soap.
Tooth Extraction Post-Op Instructions

Some pain and bleeding are normal following a tooth extraction, but you should not try to look at the surgical site or touch it. For swelling, you can apply a cold compress to that side of your face for 20 minutes at a time. During the first few days after surgery, you should restrict your diet to soft foods and liquids, but refrain from using a straw.
Veneer Post-Op Instructions

Sensitivity and tenderness of the tooth and surrounding gums are common for the first day or two after a tooth has been prepared for a veneer, but over-the-counter pain relievers can often help. You should avoid chewing on hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for 24 hours to provide enough time for the veneer to fully bond.
Whitening (In-Office) Post-Op Instructions

For the most effective results following ZOOM, KöR, or Opalescence teeth whitening, foods and drinks containing strong colors should be avoided for at least 48 hours after the treatment. It’s normal to experience some tooth sensitivity, but you should be able to manage your discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers. You can also use a toothbrush designed for desensitizing.
